MONITORING YOUR GAME PLAN PROGRESS

I have decided to adjust my GAME Plan somewhat because I may have some difficulty in securing a workshop for my students on making a documentary with the local television station. They are very busy filming other Carnival related activities, so I may have to reschedule and use alternative resources.

I would encourage my students to use online resources to locate how to film documentaries, and use any available tutorials as a guide for implementation. This should be very interesting, because they would be enhancing their online research skills, instead of viewing a live demonstration of documentary filming. I would also like students to film segments of our school´s Carnival celebrations, which would be included into the final production. Finding information about Carnival is not difficult, so we should not have any problems. While they are conducting their research, they would be assessed through observation while they work collaboratively in groups, and how they are able to manipulate the technology to locate reliable and valid information which is related to the topic. Rubrics will be provided for students to use as guides to help them understand what I will be looking for in a successful documentary which is both informative and creative.

  1. Hello Pauline~
I understand location can at times be difficult to find when working on projects with students. The classroom can be the ideal place however to expose them in the manner in which you would like what, resources are you thinking of? I think you have a great direction in supporting students and the search on how to go through the process of filming a documentary. I also feel your students' will benefit from self exploration when discovering how to implement the process of developing their goal. Observation is a strong assessment when conducting a project. It can tell a lot and provide understanding of how students are doing throughout their learning.

  2. Pauline,
I think you have a very strong concept that could yeild some great final products. And the authentic nature of the students researching and filming parts of Carnavale it some that would no doubt engage many of your students.

I'm not sure if I followed exactly what you were saying, but you can definitely get the documentary-filming experience by using a flip camera and editing on an online program like www.animoto.com.

  3. Pauline,
Being flexible with our plans is a necessity especially when we are working with real world experiences like Carnival. Have your students had much practice with the video camera(s) you will be using? If not, now would be a good time to create a mini lesson about how to use the camera and then let them have hands on experience by interviewing or taping each other explaining how to use the camera which will reinforce the skills. They will also become more comfortable talking in front of a camera and enjoy watching the playback of their practice!
